The two most common types of adult orthodontic treatments are braces and Invisalign®. Each type has its advantages and potential drawbacks, although each option achieves the same intended purpose of a straighter set of teeth and a more attractive smile
The adult orthodontics process starts with an initial consultation with our orthodontist. This consultation involves an oral examination, dental X-rays, and discussion of treatment goals. The treatment process for braces and Invisalign are slightly different.

Adult Braces
While some patients may prefer Invisalign clear aligners, others may choose braces since they remain on the teeth and do not require removal when brushing the teeth. Along with offering traditional braces, we also offer patients clear and ceramic braces. These types of braces are tooth-colored and will blend in with surrounding teeth.
With clear or ceramic braces, there is a much lower chance of people noticing the brackets and wires on the teeth. Patients will have to learn an alternative form of oral hygiene to clean their teeth with the brackets. They will also have to adjust to various dietary restrictions.
Invisalign Clear Aligners
Invisalign clear aligners fit around the teeth, similar to a mouthguard. The difference is that aligners shift the teeth into the proper alignment gradually. The patient will receive a series of aligner trays that they alternate between every two weeks or so.
The aligners are removable, so the patient will not have any dietary restrictions so long as they properly clean their teeth. While patients need to wear the aligners for around 22 hours per day, they can remove them when eating, playing sports, brushing their teeth, during meetings, when taking pictures, and more. However, patients will need to continually clean the aligners and remember to place them back in the mouth each time they remove them.
Anyone who is not happy with the appearance of their smile due to misalignment of the teeth or jaw should consider how orthodontics can help. Even if the patient received teeth-straightening treatment as a child, they might need it again as an adult. The teeth can shift back into a crooked alignment over time.
