Addressing tooth decay in kids
Every child is at risk of being diagnosed with tooth decay if they do not properly take care of their teeth. When kids do not take care of their teeth on a regular basis, they will eventually experience a buildup of tartar and plaque, which makes for very unhealthy teeth. They are also at risk if they tend to consume a lot of foods and drinks that contain a lot of sugars and/or carbohydrates. A healthy diet is essential to healthy teeth, as is getting the proper amount of nutrition every single day.
Causes of tooth decay in kids
The following is a list of some of the more common causes of tooth decay in kids.
- Consuming too many foods and drinks that contain a high amount of sugar, which bacteria in the mouth love to feed on
- Not brushing their teeth on a regular basis allows for a buildup of plaque that sticks to their teeth, which starts to eat away at the enamel of the tooth
- Some children have less saliva than normal, which automatically puts them at a higher risk for tooth decay
How to prevent tooth decay in kids
The following is a list of what kids need to do in order to avoid being diagnosed with one or more cavities.
- Have them brush their teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoridated toothpaste
- Have them floss their teeth at least once a day to remove any food particles hidden in their teeth that can lead to cavities
- Give them healthier food and drink options
- Give them water to drink so they can rinse their mouth if they do happen to eat sugary foods or drinks and do not have time to brush their teeth afterward
Are your kids currently in need of a dental check-up?
Want to be sure there are no signs of tooth decay in your kids? The only way you can be absolutely sure is to take your kids in for regular dental check-ups. Even if you look in your kids' mouths and do not see any signs of decay, it is still possible for there to be decay present, as it can be difficult to see in its beginning stages. Once one or more of your kids’ teeth are in decay, the overall health of these teeth is now in jeopardy. Now that you understand the causes of tooth decay as well as how to prevent it from happening to your kids, you can make choices for your kids that ensure their good oral health.
